Harvey Lash, M.D., D.D.S. In Memoriam


Harvey Lash, M.D., D.D.S., class of 1955, passed away on July 18, 2025 at the age of 98. Dr.
Lash held a dental degree from Ohio State University and a Masters of Pathology from the
University of Minnesota. While enrolled at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, he
served as an instructor in undergraduate physiology. He completed his general surgery training
at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and his plastic surgery residency at The Mayo
Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He and his family moved to Palo Alto California where he
founded the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Palo Alto Medical Clinic. He became a
Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Stanford University.

Dr. Lash was an examiner for the American Board of Plastic Surgery and served as president of
the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgery in 1983.

Dr. Lash was a coauthor of more than 100 scientific papers. He was the inventor of the the first
practical penile implant for impotence. He also helped design, along with researchers at the
Stanford Research Institute, an early artificial tooth. He was the first to employ the argon laser
to treat cavernous/capillary hemangioma of the skin. He designed a variety of implants and
worked with his son, Robert, on biomedical inventions including a surgical blood loss analyzer
for improving the safety and cosmetic results of the early liposuction procedures as well as a
female condom.

Dr. Lash was a devoted family man and known for his warmth, wit and fun loving nature. He
was preceded in death by his wife of 78 years, Rose. He is survived by his two sons, also
physicians, and two grandsons.
